Working with Spreadsheets – Data Dictionaries and Tidy Data

Description:

Do you collect your research data in spreadsheets? Have you ever looked back at your research from last year, only to realize that you don’t understand all the headers anymore? Or, have you struggled to make visualizations of your data match your expectations of how they should look? This is the workshop for you! In this hands-on workshop, we will be talking about data dictionaries, a simple but effective tool to describe your data. Together, we will walk through the steps to make a dictionary unique to your data. We will also briefly cover the principles of tidy data, a standard way to structure spreadsheet data that can help make it easier to analyze and visualize.

This workshop is for:
•    Any researchers who collect, analyze, and share data in spreadsheets
•    Anyone who struggles to comprehend their own spreadsheet data months after it was collected
•    Researchers who want to share their data, but aren’t sure if others will understand it
•    Anyone who struggles to analyze or visualize spreadsheet data
